ANDERSON, S.C. - The Union College volleyball team rallied for a 3-0 victory over Coker (S.C.) College Friday as a part of the opening day at the Anderson University Invitational in Anderson, S.C. The day started for the Lady Bulldogs with 3-1 setback against USC-Aiken.
The win is the first for Union's Whitney Erb as a collegiate head coach and the Lady Bulldogs enter the second day of play on Saturday with a 1-1 mark. Union starts the day with a 9 a.m. contest with Benedict (S.C.) College and finish play at 1 p.m. versus Claflin (S.C.) College. All four opponents are NCAA Division II members as well.
Union - 3, Coker - 0
The closest set for Union with Coker was the opening set at 25-15. The Lady Bulldogs went on for wins of 25-13 and 25-9 in the final two for the sweep.
Autumn Combs, a junior from Florence, Ky., recorded a team-best seven blocks with eight kills. Brooke Vinovich (Somerset, Ky.) also racked up eight kills with her seven digs. Stephanie Pateman (Weyburn, Canada) served two aces to go with her seven kills.
Christina Prindle (Florence, Ky.) accounted for 25 assists while Monica Moreland (Louisville, Ky.) was credited with 12 digs.
Union - 1, USC-Aiken - 3
Union bounced back after a 25-12 loss in the first set with a 25-23 win in the second. USC-Aiken won the third set with a similar 25-23 score with a match-clinching 25-20 victory in the fourth set.
Vinovich led the team with 10 kills while Pateman added eight kills. Combs also accounted for eight kills with three blocks. Amelia Cantrell (Georgetown, Ky.) made a statement in her first collegiate match with four blocks.
Moreland had 22 assists with 17 digs which were team best and Prindle served three aces and added 11 digs.

Lady Bulldog Notes
- Union went 2-4 against NCAA Division II teams last season.
Combs had 9.5 blocks against Mountain State (W.Va.) University, the most by any Union player in a match during 2007.
The Lady Bulldogs had 20 wins behind 3-0 sweeps in 2007.
