BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Playing the home opener of the 2008 season, the Union College volleyball team won two sets in a row to take a 3-1 victory over University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) Tuesday evening.
Union took the opening set 25-12 only to see Cumberlands bounce back for a 25-18 win. The next two sets went to the Lady Bulldogs by the scores of 25-23 and 26-24.
With the win, Union improved to 4-1 while this was the season opener for Cumberlands and 2008 starts at 0-1.
Stephanie Pateman (Weyburn, Canada) used a season-high nine kills to lead the Union offense. Monica Moreland (Louisville, Ky.) was credited with 28 assists and 12 digs.
Christina Prindle (Florence, Ky.) led the squad with 19 digs and also served three aces. Brooke Vinovich (Somerset, Ky.) had a career-best 14 digs.
The Union career record holder in blocks, Autumn Combs (Florence, Ky.) added three more to her total. Amelia Cantrell (Georgetown, Ky.) also had three blocks.
Union opens the Appalachian Athletic Conference schedule on Friday evening at home. The Lady Bulldogs will host Bryan (Tenn.) College in a key early-season contest at 7 p.m.
In a junior varsity contest earlier in the evening, Union won 3-0 over Cumberlands. The closest set was the first with a 25-22 score. The Lady Bulldogs continued with 25-14 and 15-8 wins in the next two.
Lesley Isaacs (McKee, Ky.) was credited with 15 assists while Nicole Bistline (Frankfort, Ky.) and Tara Gambrel (Middlesboro, Ky.) had seven and five kills, respectively. Melissa Shannon (Danville, Ky.) added 12 digs.
Lady Bulldog Notes
- Union is 3-2 against Cumberlands in the last five meetings.
This was the second four-game set for Union this season and the Lady Bulldogs improved to 1-1 in such matches. The other three have been 3-0 sweeps.
Last season, Union went 16-2 inside Robsion Arena.
