BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - It might have taken two games Saturday, but the Union College women's soccer team captured the Lady Bulldog Soccer Classic with a pair of victories. The day started when Union defeated Emmanuel (Ga.) College 3-1 and then beat Cumberland (Tenn.) University 3-0 in the nightcap.

In the opening contest, Emmanuel done something no other team had done to Union this season, score a goal. However, Union had built a 2-0 advantage before the score.

The opening goal by Union was kicked by Heather Jaques (Manitoba, Canada) in the seventh minute with the assist going to Marcela Salum (Guatemala City, Guatemala).

Salum added her name to the scoring sheet again when she assisted Ashley Hall (Hazard, Ky.) with her goal in the 57th minute. Salum also scored Union's final goal with five minutes left in the contest after an assist from Renata Peixoto (Brasilia, Brazil).

The first goal allowed in the 2008 season by the Lady Bulldogs came at the 62 minute mark with an unassisted goal from Stephanie Schultz.

Union's Brittany Puryear (Somerset, Ky.) recorded seven saves in the contest. The Lady Bulldogs also won the shot category with 20 shots and Emmanuel took 11 shots.

Against Cumberland, Ashleigh Mensch (Elizabethtown, Ky.) opened the scoring at the 10 minute mark with her first goal of the season. The assists were credited to Peixoto and Karla Goncavles (Sao Paulo, Brazil).

Jaques distributed the ball around which led to the next two goals. The first was booted to the back of the net by Salum halfway through the opening half and Peixoto added the third goal right before the halftime break.

Puryear stopped two shots in the first half before giving way to Ashley Bennett (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Briann Bargo (Somerset, Ky.) entered in the second half to preserve the shutout.

The Lady Bulldog Soccer Classic MVP went to Jaques with a goal scored and two assists in the day.

At the end of the day, along with the classic championship, Union improved to 5-0 while Emmanuel went to 1-3 and Cumberland owns a 2-2 record.

Next on the Lady Bulldogs' schedule is a trip to play University of the Cumberlands on Wednesday. Their contest is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
