JACKSON, Tenn. -  Union College shook off some voodoo Saturday as it opened the 2008 season with a 27-21 victory at Lambuth (Tenn.) University, marking the first time since 1997 Union has defeated Lambuth.

Union is now 1-0 on the season, while Lambuth dropped to 0-2. The Bulldogs return home next Saturday to play host to Malone (Ohio) College, whose season-opening game was canceled due to Tropical Storm Hannah. Malone was to play The Apprentice School in Newport News, Va.

Lambuth took the early lead, marching 87 yards in 10 plays to grab a 7-0 lead. Marquis Williams scored on a 27-yard run with 7:02 remaining in the first.

Union struck twice in the second quarter en route to a 14-7 halftime lead. At the 9:06 mark, Mike Brinkley (Anthony, Fla.) hit Kyle Callahan (Covington, Ky.) for a 17-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7-7. After a Lambuth fumble, the Bulldogs found the end zone in no time. Terence Pollock (Orange Park, Fla.) capped a four-play, 20-yard drive with a 4-yard plunge as Union seized a 14-7 advantage with 6:03 left in the half.

Jacob Appleby (Harvest, Ala.) hit a 20-yard field goal at the 11:15 mark in the third to make it 17-7. Midway through the third, Brinkley and Callahan hooked up again; this time from 10-yards out as Union built a 24-7 cushion.

Early in the fourth, Lambuth cut the margin to 24-14, but Appleby booted an 18-yard field goal to push the lead to 27-14 with 5:38 remaining.

Union narrowly outgained Lambuth 341-337. The Bulldogs had a balanced attack with 147 yards rushing and 194 yards passing.

Offensively for Union, Brinkley completed 25-of-40 passes for 194 yards and two scores. Callahan hauled in eight passes for 85 yards and two touchdowns, while Chris Thomas (Hopkinsville, Ky.) had six receptions for 60 yards.

Pollock recorded his seventh 100-yard rushing game of his career, racking up 133 yards on 23 carries. In addition, Pollock now has 1,506 career rushing yards.

Defensively, newcomer and senior Willie Williams (Miami, Fla.) had an impressive debut with 12 total tackles, 2.5 for a loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

For Lambuth, Adam Wiese completed 13-of-19 passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Wiese also led the Eagles in rushing with 51 yards on eight carries. Cedric Fisher led Lambuth defensively with 13 stops and one blocked punt.

Bulldog Notes

  • This marks the first time Union won its season opener since 2004 when it defeated UVa-Wise 46-13.
  • Kyle Callahan is now 10th on the all-time receiving list with 84 career receptions. He is one behind Jim Maynor for ninth.
