BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College tandem of Marcela Salum and Brittany Puryear was the choices for the Appalachian Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, the organization announced Monday.

Salum, a freshman from Guatemala City, Guatemala, totaled 13 points in the three games this week. She scored five goals with three assists. The week started with her second straight hat trick at Mountain State (W.Va.) University with an assist. In Saturday's double dip, Salum scored a goal and had a pair of assists in a 3-1 win over Emmanuel and she ended the day with a goal against Cumberland (Tenn.) University. She has scored in all five of Union's matches this season. Her eight goals and 21 points lead the conference.

Puryear, a junior from Somerset, Ky., played 180 minutes in goal during Union's three matches and allowed one goal. The goal scored by Emmanuel (Ga.) College was the first allowed by Union all season. On Saturday, Puryear played 135 minutes in two matches and recorded nine saves on the day. She was the AAC and NAIA Region XII Defensive Player of the Week last season.

For the week, Union went 3-0 to improve to 5-0 on the year. This marks the best start by a Lady Bulldog squad since the 2005 team opened the year with a 4-1 record.

Next for Union is a trip to play University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) on Wednesday. The kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
