KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Union College senior linebacker Willie Williams is this week's NAIA Defensive Player of the Week, the national organization announced Monday.
Kevin Kinsall of McKendree (Ill.) University was named NAIA Special Teams Player of the Week, while Josh Kittell of Jamestown (N.D.) College was named NAIA Offensive Player of the Week.
This is the first week the NAIA has held the awards this season.
Coincidentally, Union had the most recent NAIA Defensive Player of the Week as Patrick O'Neal received the honor the last week of the 2007 regular season.
Williams, a 6-4, 220 lbs., senior linebacker from Miami, Fla., had a monster effort in Union's first win over Lambuth (Tenn.) since 1997. He posted 13 tackles, including seven solo, to go along with 2.5 tackles-for-loss for 17 yards. He also tallied two sacks and recovered two fumbles, which led to two second-quarter Bulldog touchdowns. He helped Union come back from a 7-0 hole and take a 14-7 lead that it would never relinquish. This game was Williams' first in a Bulldog uniform.
Union (1-0 overall) will play host to Malone (Ohio) College Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
