ATHENS, Tenn. - The Appalachian Athletic Conference season did not get off to the start the Union College women's soccer team wanted on Saturday as the squad suffered a 4-2 loss at Tennessee Wesleyan College.

The loss was the first of the season for Union as the Lady Bulldogs moved to 6-1 on the season and 0-1 in the AAC. Tennessee Wesleyan went to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Union tied the contest with a Renata Peixoto (Brasilia, Brazil) penalty kick goal coming in the 32nd minute. Tennessee Wesleyan took the lead eight minutes before that.

A Heather Jaques (Manitoba, Canada) goal from 17 yards out to the far post gave Union a 2-1 lead at the 36 minute mark. The assist came from Peixoto and it was a cross to Jaques.

Three second-half goals from Tennessee Wesleyan proved to be too much for Union to overcome. The game-tying goal came during the 71st minute and the go-ahead score five minutes later. The final score was booted home with two minutes to go.

In goal for Union, Brittany Puryear (Somerset, Ky.) recorded nine saves.

Union will make the trip to play Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Asbury (Ky.) College Wednesday. The contest is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Lady Bulldog Notes

  • Union only allowed one goal in the first six matches of 2008.
  • In 2007, Union only gave up four or more goals twice.
  • Peixoto is now a perfect 2-for-2 in penalty kicks so far this season.
