
WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The Union College women's swimming team broke five school records and swam to six national cuts Saturday in the season-opening meet at University of the Cumberlands.
The final event of the day, the 200-yard freestyle, saw Union break a school record behind an "A" cut. The quartet of Kristina Kirk (Versailles, Ky.), Mollie Messmer (Scott City, Mo.), Tamsin Petersen (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Molly Fittro (Seaside, Calif.) posted a time of one minute and 48.22 seconds, three seconds better than the old Union record.
Petersen used a time of 2:16.85 in the 200 individual medley for a school record and "A" cut. She also shattered the Union 100 butterfly record by seven seconds for another "A" cut. The freshman completed the event in 1:02.66.
Fittro obtained an "A" cut behind her 56.88 school-record time in the 100 freestyle. She also posted a time of 26.27 second in the 50 freestyle which broke the Union record and gave the freshman a "B" cut.
Messmer started her individual season with a "B" cut in the 500 freestyle. The junior posted a time of 5:41.23.
In the team standings, Cumberlands scored 115 points while Union scored 72.
Union's next meet is the home opener. The Bulldogs will host Campbellsville (Ky.) University and Bellarmine (Ky.) University for a 1 p.m. meet Saturday, Oct. 25.
