
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Union College cycling team reclaimed the MidWest Collegiate Cycling Conference championship Sunday in the regular-season finale at Purdue (Ind.) University. The conference championship is the fifth since the 2002 season.
Union, a Division II member, totaled 5,419 points during the season with 2,532 at the MWCCC championship. Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College finished second overall and first in Division I, with 4,514 points overall and 1,976 during the championship. The University of Michigan and Missouri finished third and fourth, respectively. The next highest Division II squad was Michigan Tech in fifth overall. Michigan Tech scored 1,958 points overall and 418 over the weekend.
The conference crown is also the fifth for Union head coach Chuck Coffey. Union won the MWCCC in 2002 before three straight championships from 2004-2006.
Saturday's expert men's cross country race was won by Zach Winn (Port Hope, Canada), giving the Union rider nine wins on the year. German (Nano) Bermudez (Louisville, Ky.) finished fourth, followed by teammate Greg Gibson (Salt Lake City, Utah). Brad Nelson (Carmel, Ind.) rounded out the Union squad in seventh.
The teams, along with ten other schools from the conference will advance to the National Collegiate Cycling Association National Championship in Banner Elk, N.C. Action gets underway on Oct. 24. The national appearance is the ninth straight for the Union program.
On the women's side, Rachel Millsop (Little Rock, Ark.) finished second in the expert cross country race. Sara Seitz (Lexington, Ky.) added a fifth-place finish.
Millsop added a win in the expert short track with a third-place dual slalom finish. Winn added an expert short track win Sunday. Gibson finished fourth. Nelson and Jonathan Turner (Harlan, Ky.) both finished in the Top-10.
In the dual slalom on Sunday, Bermudez finished second while Nelson picked up a fourth-place finish.
Amy Russell (Monticello, Ky.) posted a fourth-place finish in Sunday's dual slalom.
Zac Moore (Loveland, Ohio) added solid finishes in the expert division all weekend.
Matt Mourmohamadi (Laguna Hills, Calif.) and Sean Trinque (Burriville, R.I.) provided solid runs in the "B" class for Union. Emily Yeager (Dry Ridge, Ky.) returned from injury with strong rides for Union. Clay Steiger (Chattanooga, Tenn.) added support for the team in the quest for the MWCCC championship according to Coffey.
