
Renzo Lopez was hired as the head coach of the Union College men's and women's tennis programs in the fall of 2004.
Since taking over the tennis programs, Lopez has transformed the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs from a dormant sport to a contender in NAIA Region XII and the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
After twice finishing as the conference regular-season runner-up, the Bulldogs won both the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles en route to capturing the NAIA Region XII championship and a berth to the NAIA National Championship Tournament in 2007. At nationals, Union went 1-1 to make to the round of 16. The Bulldogs have also produced seven First Team All-Conference players, one Conference Player of the Year and one NAIA Region XII Player of the Year in posting a 48-11 record under Lopez, who was also named the Appalachian Athletic Conference and NAIA Region XII Men's Tennis Coach of the Year in 2007.
As the women's coach, Lopez has seen the Lady Bulldogs win two conference regular-season titles, one conference tournament crown and the NAIA Region XII championship. Union advanced to the NAIA National Tournament in 2007, making to the round of 16 before being eliminated. The Lady Bulldogs are 31-9 under Lopez and have produced five First Team All-Conference players, one Conference Player of the Year and two NAIA Region XII Players of the Year. In 2007, he was named e Appalachian Athletic Conference and NAIA Region XII Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.
A 2002 graduate of Pikeville (Ky.) College, Lopez was a member of the 2002 NAIA National Championship Runner-Up team. He was named to the Mid-South Conference First Team as a singles and doubles player in 2001 and 2002. In 2001, Lopez was ranked as the No. 18 singles player in the NAIA, while he was rated No. 32 in 2002.
Prior to his tenure at Pikeville, Lopez played two seasons at NCAA Division II Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) University.
A native of Arequipa, Peru, Lopez now resides in Corbin, Ky.
