In the fall of 2005, Union College celebrated 100 years of Bulldog Athletics by revealing the Top 100 moments in school history.
During a two-year period, hundreds of nominations were submitted, and a two-month long, online poll was conducted on the Union College Athletics website to determine the Top 100 Moments in Bulldog History.
Having received nearly 1,400 votes, the Top 100 Moments were compiled and moments No. 11 through No. 100 were announced on August 12, 2005. (You can view the list by clicking here
On October 1, 2005, the Top 10 Moments were released at the Union College Hall of Fame banquet as part of the school's homecoming festivities.
The Top 10 Moments are as follows:
Number 10 - The 2002-03 - WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM ... The Lady Bulldogs set 11 program records en route advancing to the NAIA National Tournament. The records include most points in a season (2,831), points per game (80.9), wins (25), most field goals made (983), most 3-points made (296) and most rebounds (1,366).
Number 9 - The 2002 MOUNTAIN BIKING TEAM ... Union wins the NCCA Division II National Championship for the school's first-ever national title, and Amanda McKay captures the NCCA Division II Women's Individual Championship.
Number 8 - The 1967-68 MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM ... The Bulldogs win the KIAC and NAIA District 24 tournament championships to advance to the NAIA National Championship Tournament for the first time in school history. Union registered a school-record 27 wins in going 27-6 overall, and Paul Andrews was named the KIAC Player of the Year, while he and Ken Meibers were named NAIA All-American Honorable Mentions.
Number 7 - JUSTIN BARRIER STEALS HOME on April 16, 2005 ... Justin Barrier led off the eighth inning with a triple off the center-field wall and then stole home with two outs, giving Union a 3-2, extra-inning win over No. 24 Tennessee Wesleyan College.
Number 6 - THE 1992, 1993 & 1994 BASEBALL TEAMS ... Union wins back-to-back-to-back KIAC and District 32 championships.
Number 5 - PIZA POST SIX GOALS on August 30, 2000 ... Fernando Piza scored a school-record six goals and had a school-record 13 points as Union shut out Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University 10-0.
Number 4 - FILIPE RE-WRITES RECORD BOOK on November 2, 2001 ... Juliana Filipe scored career goal No. 138 to become the all-time leading goal scorer in collegiate history - all divisions, all genders. She finished with 145 career goals and was named a First Team All-American in 2001.
Number 3 - CHASITY NUNN'S STELLAR CAREER ... Chasity Nunn became the first Lady Bulldog to score over 1,000 points during her first two seasons in the program. She finished with 1,089 points, ranking her seventh all-time. Nunn also ranks sixth all-time in rebounding with 455 rebounds. During her first season at Union, she helped the Lady Bulldogs win the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament and advance to the NAIA National Tournament for the first-time ever. Nunn was named to the AAC All-Conference First Team and as a NAIA All-American Honorable Mention her senior season.
Number 2 - WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CAPTURES AAC CHAMPIONSHIP ... Union defeated Brevard College 70-62 for the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament championship, earning the Lady Bulldogs their first-ever berth to the NAIA Division II National Tournament.
And the Number 1 Moment in Bulldog History - ERNIE TROSPER NAMED ALL-AMERICAN ... Ernie Trosper was named a NAIA Men's Basketball All-American in 1955, making him the first Union student-athlete to receive the honor in school history. In addition, Trosper was the first player in school history to score over 2,000 points in a career.
