
Renzo Lopez was hired as the head coach of the Union College men's and women's tennis programs in the fall of 2004.
Since taking over the tennis programs, Lopez has transformed the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs from a dormant sport to a contender in NAIA Region XII and the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
After twice finishing as the conference regular-season runner-up, the Bulldogs won both the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles en route to capturing the NAIA Region XII championship and a berth to the NAIA National Championship Tournament in 2007. Union repeated as 2008 AAC regular season and tournament champs before another NAIA Region XII championship. At nationals, Union went 1-1 to make to the round of 16 in 2007. At the 2008 NAIA National Championship, Union went 1-1 once again. The Bulldogs have also produced 11 First Team All-Conference players, two Conference Player of the Year and two NAIA Region XII Player of the Yearin posting a 64-14 record under Lopez, who was also named the Appalachian Athletic Conference and NAIA Region XII Men's Tennis Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2008.
As the women's coach, Lopez has seen the Lady Bulldogs win three conference regular-season titles, two conference tournament crowns and the NAIA Region XII championship twice. He guided them to a second-straight NAIA National Tournament appearance in 2008 reaching the Round of 16. Union advanced to the NAIA National Tournament in 2007, making to the round of 16 before being eliminated. The Lady Bulldogs are 46-14 under Lopez and have produced nine First Team All-Conference players, two Conference Player of the Year and three NAIA Region XII Players of the Year. In 2007 and 2008, he was named the Appalachian Athletic Conference and NAIA Region XII Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.
Lopez's teams have been noticed nationally as well. The Bulldogs achieved a rank of ninth nationally in 2008 while the Lady Bulldogs were as high as No. 17.
A 2002 graduate of Pikeville (Ky.) College, Lopez was a member of the 2002 NAIA National Championship Runner-Up team. He was named to the Mid-South Conference First Team as a singles and doubles player in 2001 and 2002. In 2001, Lopez was ranked as the No. 18 singles player in the NAIA, while he was rated No. 32 in 2002.
Prior to his tenure at Pikeville, Lopez played two seasons at NCAA Division II Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) University.
A native of Arequipa, Peru, Lopez now resides in Corbin, Ky.
